According to LSEG data, S&P 500 companies' earnings in the second quarter are expected to rise by 5.8%, down from the 10.2% forecast on April 1, before Donald Trump launched his trade war.

Investors are also awaiting U.S. consumer price data for June, looking for any signs of price pressure from tariffs or indications on the Federal Reserve's policy choices.

But the main move by the Fed that Trump is seeking is an early exit for Jerome Powell, who has not given in to the president's desire to cut rates "for rocket fuel."

Bond markets are anxious about the possibility that an investigation into the restructuring of the central bank's headquarters could serve as a pretext to oust Powell.
